I Bet You’d Never Guess I Used To Be A…

GAMER! Yes, I’ll admit it. If there’s anyone who knows about being a nerd it’s me.

First of all, when people think of gamers they automatically think of men playing video games for hours beyond hours. And while that may be true, there’s a huge community of female gamers too.

Back in the day (my sophmore year of high school) I guess you could say I was struggling to find my identity. I remembered seeing my brother play this game called Rainbow Six 3 Black Arrow (excuse my nerdyness :D) and I became HOOKED. It’s still one of my favorite video games, but like all video games it came to an end once the Halo series came out.

I still played Rainbow Six 3 Black Arrow along with Splinter Cell but Halo 2 stole my heart. I’m not kidding, I really feel in love with this game and the community of gamers!

When people think of gamers they think of nerdy kids who are anti-social and have nothing else to do besides sitting in a dark room glaring at a T.V. screen while screaming obscenities at the guy who just stole your rocket launcher. This misconception is totally wrong and while I may be speaking in “nerd code” right now, you all need to know how AWESOME the gaming community is.

There was many struggles being a female gamer, two of which stand out to me are…

  1. People not believing your actually a girl playing video games and kicking ass at the same time
  2. People would hit on you and be extremely rude

The hardest part for me was people calling me a boy because there was no way a girl could possibly be playing a video game right? Well you’re wrong.

I was part of a huge female clan called PMS (haha funny right? It stands for Pandora’s Mighty Soldiers). It was a clan for only females and we kicked ASS. Gamer ass of course, but nonetheless. I loved Halo 2. Being able to be one of the top gamers in my clan and play with my awesome guy friends at the same time were some of the best memories I have in life. It is a part of my life that I am by no means ashamed to admit to because I am proud of being a gamer.

I feel totally bad ass. Heck yes, I’m a gamer! My fingers turned magical as soon as I touched the controller. I would spend HOURS on my XBox. I ain’t talkin’ two or three hours, I’m talkin’ 7-8 hours a day. I would get home from school around 3 and game until 9 or 10 at night. It’s addicting and what’s more addicting is being able to laugh and have a total blast while playing video games. What’s even better is that I played on XBox Live which is where you can talk to your friends and play with people around the world!

Everyone in my school knew me as “the girl who kicks ass in Halo”. Everyone would ask to challenge me and I said sure. Low and behold, every guy that tried to beat me in Halo ended up getting their asses kicked. Best. Feeling. Ever.

Eventually, I went to a MLG competition (Major League Gaming) (where I met my boyfriend, but that’s another story!) and I played against a ton of other guys. MLG is just what it sounds like, and yes, you can make a ton of money by becoming a professional gamer. There were TONS of T.V.’s lined up in a row, everyone screaming at the screen to kill this guy, and throw a grenade here and there. Someone even asked for my autograph haha. Teams would even have coaches! I was one of the only couple dozen girls there. It was so intimidating and I can’t believe I actually did that. While playing people were actually yelling my gamertag (PMS Lovey)! I was smitten. While I didn’t get far (the competition is crazy), the experience was AMAZING (writing this post makes me miss gaming so much)

Here’s a few pictures of what an MLG event looks like:

That’s a picture where the pro’s play! Gaming is so badass!!!!! (my inner nerd is slowly creeping out…uh oh)

That’s where I’d be playing…squished between a bunch of male gamers with my headphones on so you can hear if someone is creeping up on you in the game. The guys standing behind the players are coaches. They help tell the gamers where the opponents on the other team are. Basically, coaches help keep their players alive. You can either play on a team of 4 or solo. I was solo. My brother played on a team and so did my boyfriend.

The best time of my life and when I felt most alive is when I gaming. It may sound weird and counterproductive since all I would do is sit in front of a T.V. screen but it is something I will never forget. Since then, Halo 2 has been played out and now many people play Halo 3 (I hate Halo 3, it’s nothing compared to Halo 2) and Call Of Duty. I know I was one of the “original” gamers before MLG became super popular. And while I’ll never forget gaming, I will always be a gamer.

So, in light of gaming I thought I’d make something to make you all come over to the dark side ;)…

Come Over To The Dark Side, We Have Chocolate Gingerbread Cookies

These cookies will have you channeling your inner nerd in no time. They’re chewy, chocolate-y, and gingerbread-y and will make you want to bust out crazy mathematical solutions, gaming controller, or just your rolling-pin. Makes 10-12 cookies

Adapted from Martha Stewart

  • 3/4 cup + 1/2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 + 1/8 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp cloves
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 + 1/2 tbsp unsweetened applesauce (see note*)
  • 1/4 cup Earth Balance butter (or regular)
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (or your favorite vegan chocolate chips)
  • 1 tbsp grated fresh ginger *
  • 1/4 cup dark brown sugar, packed
  • 1/8 cup unsulfured molasses *
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/8 cup raw turbinado sugar

(Note: I didn’t have any fresh ginger or molasses (!!) but the recipe still turned out fabulous! However, I recommend adding unsweetened applesauce if you don’t have molasses because the mixture will be very dry)

  1. Preheat oven to 325*. Sift flour, ground ginger, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and cocoa in a bowl & whisk until combined. Set aside.
  2. In an electric stand mixer cream together the butter and brown sugar (this is also where you would add the molasses and grated fresh ginger if you have any).
  3. Dissolve the baking soda in 1/2 + 1/4 tsp boiling water.
  4. Beat in 1/2 the flour mixture into the butter mixture, then beat in the baking soda and the rest of the flour. Next, mix in the chocolate.
  5. Take about a tablespoon of the mixture and roll it into a ball in your hands, then roll in the raw turbinado sugar. Place onto a non-stick baking sheet (I sprayed mine with a little nonstick spray). Once the balls are all rolled out and have been rolled in sugar, press down with the back side of a spoon to flatten.
  6. Bake for 10-12 minutes and allow to cool on a wire rack (or tin foil) for 5 minutes.

Gather up your ingredients…

That should be raw sugar… I didn’t realize it until I was rolling the balls that it should be raw!

After whisking the flour, ground ginger, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and cocoa…

I was weary about combining ginger and chocolate together but this combination is SO. GOOD.

You’ll be surprised how soft and chewy these cookies are! When you bite into them you notice the melted chocolate chips throughout the cookie.

These are definitely my new favorite cookie. Mmmmmmmm

Ohhh yesss!

Are you coming over to the dark side yet? ;)
